Kidepo Vs Murchison Falls – Location
Nestled in the remote corners of northeastern Uganda lies Kidepo Valley National Pak, Uganda’s hidden gem dubbed as African hidden Eden due to its untouched wilderness. Generally, Kidepo Valley National Park is the furthest game park in Uganda located in the remote distant north-east of Uganda, close by the borders of South Sudan and Kenya.
Murchison Falls National Park on the other hand is located in northwestern Uganda, extending inland from the shores of Lake Albert and around the Victoria Nile to the Karuma Falls area. The park spans across the districts of Buliisa, Nwoya, Kiryandongo and Masindi.

Kidepo Valley National Park is nestled in the rugged, semi-arid valleys of Karamojong province in Northeastern Uganda, the park’s landscape is characterized of savannah plains, framed by jagged mountain horizons. There are two main rivers crossing the park, the Kidepo and Narus rivers, these rivers are seasonal rivers.
Kidepo Valley National Park is surrounded by mountain ranges, with the southern boundary defined by the Morungole range reaching heights of 2,750 meters above sea level and the northern boundary is characterized by rugged savannah, dominated by the towering Kidepo Mountain.
Kidepo Valley National Park stands out for its spectacular landscape characterized by vast savannah plains, rugged mountains and deep valley. The park is dominated by the majestic Narus Valley in the south and the rugged Kidepo Valley in the north, both offering stunning panoramic views.
On the other hand, Murchison Falls National Park has an impressive landscape where toe Victoria Nile River carves through rugged terrain, diving the park into two regions that is the Southern Region and Northern Region.
The Southern region of Murchison Falls National Park is dominated by woodlands and forest patches, this region has a few game tracks. The Northern region of the park is dominated by savannah and Borassus plams, acacia trees, and riverine woodland. This region hosts a huge population of wildlife thus offering the most incredible game viewing opportunities in Murchison Falls National Park.
The park also has a few rocks, the rocks at the top of the falls are politic schist containing centimeter-sized muscovite crystals. Also, the Nile Albert Delta area is underlines by pre-Cambrian rocks which comprise Cenozoic rocks.
Kidepo Vs Murchison Falls – Wildlife
Kidepo Valley National Park is the third largest national park in Uganda hosting 77 mammal species including 20 species of predator including lion, leopard and spotted hyena. The black-backed jacka, bat-eared fox, cheetah and aardworlf are endemic to Kidepo Valley National Park. The elephant population here is over 650, buffaloes are estimated to be over 10,000 and there are over 50 Rothschild’s giraffes which is an internationally important population.
Kidepo Valley National Park is home to 470 bird species recorded here including 60 endemic species, the largest population of Clapperton’s francolin in East Africa and rose-ringed parakeet only found in Kidepo. There are 56 species of raptors in Kidepo and it is the only place in Uganda where you can encounter the majesty Common Ostrich.
Murchison Falls National Park on the other hand is home 76 mammal species including four of the Big Five including cape buffalo, elephants, lions and leopards. Other Murchison Falls wildlife include Rothschild giraffes, warthogs, Uganda kob, hartebeests and several primate species including over 800 chimpanzees, olive baboons, black and white colobus monkeys, the red tailed monkeys and many others found in Kaniyo Pabidi as well as the Budongo forest.
Murchison Falls National Park hosts over 450 bird species recorded, including he Goliath Heron, African Quail-Finch, the elegant Grey Crowned Cranes, Blue-headed Coucal, White-browed Sparrow Weaver, Swamp Flycatcher, Red-throated Bee-eater, Squacco Heron, Silver bird, African Jacana, Piapiac, Sandpipers, Eastern Grey Plantain-eater, Denham’s Bustard, Weaver Birds, Abyssinian Ground-Hornbill among others.

Kidepo Valley National Park has limited accommodation options and the available optons include Apoka Safari Lodge, Kidepo Savannah Lodge, Nga’Moru Wilderness Camp, Kidepo River Lodge, Adere Safari Lodge and the Kakine Self-Catering campsite including Morungole Camp, Lobolo Camp, Karenge Community Camp and Apoka Rest Camp.

Accommodations in the park are found in three locations that is The Albert Nile and the northwest, Paraa and the Victoria Nile and Kaniyo Pabidi and the Masindi road. Kidepo Vs Murchison Falls – Best Time to Visit
Both parks offer exceptional wildlife viewing year-round, however certain months stand out due to wildlife viewing experiences.
Kidepo Valley National Park – Generally the dry season is generally considered to best time to visit Kidepo Valley National Park for wildlife viewing. In this season the park becomes a ride from November to February, animals congregate around the few remaining water sources, making them easier to spot. The Narus Valley with its perennial water supply becomes a hub of activity, attracting a wide array of animals from elephants, lions to giraffes and various antelope species.
Murchison Falls National Park - Between March and November are rainy season in the park, this however doesn’t prevent access to the park. June and September is still one of the most popular times to visit, but be ready for short, sharp burst of rains.
December and February is drier, but also much hotter, with an average high of 33 degrees Celsius. Just like other national parks, the dry season forces wildlife to congregate around sources, making for impressive sightings.
Kidepo Vs Murchison Falls – Accessibility
Kidepo Valley National Park is situated in the furthest corner in Uganda, however it is easily accessed by road and air means. By Road, it is a journey of approximately 700 meters from Uganda’s capital Kampala. There are two routes from Kampala to Kidepo, the first route takes you through Karuma, Gulu, and Kitgum. This route is usually faster and traverses past the stunning Karuma Falls on the Victoria Nile. The second route goes through Mbale, Soroti, and Moroto, it is a bit longer and offers striking views of Mount Elgon and the vast plains of Karamoja.
By air – There are daily scheduled light aircraft of 80 minutes from Entebbe International Airport to Apoka Airstrip.
Murchison Falls National Park on the other hand is easily accessed from Kampala and Entebbe via road or flight. From Kampala, it takes approximately 4-6 hours (305 km) to get to Murchison Falls National Park’s headquarters at Paraa. The most direct route to Murchison Falls National Park from Kampala is through the southern gates (Kichumbanyobo and Masindi South Gate).
Alternatively, the northern gates (Purongo or Takigate - Packwach) are also a great option, although longer in distance, they take you straight to the most interesting sections of the park.
By Air – There are chartered aircraft or daily scheduled flights from Kajjansi Airfield near Kampala taking about one hour. The most convenient airfield to arrive at is Pakuba Airstrip because of its proximity to the park headquarters and the main accommodations. Other airstrips serving Murchison Falls National Park include Chobe Airstrip and Bugungu Airstrip.
